Hello I just replacerd the timing belt and the engine runs but the vacum advance is hitting the block not allowing the timing to get better than 5 degrees
after tdc. I think it got a tooth off on the accessory drive. any ideas?

If you timing marks are off, I'd bite the bullet on a $12 gasket is get the marks right. If it's just the advance on the distributor, jump it back a
notch, tap the key until it falls into the oil pump grove and see if you can set the advance the way you like. Marks should be straight up on the cam, TDC on
the crank and aligned with the crank cover with the accessory drive when tight. I usually start the accessory gear off aligned so that it comes into alignment
as you move the housing to tighten the belt.

In some cases, the timing mark for the camshaft is 180 degrees from the up position. If you are using a camshaft gear from a 1969 engine, the timing mark goes
in the down position. Also, the center line of the rotor is included in the setup procedure. The location of the timing marks are shown in the appropriate
Pontiac service manual. It is recommended that you make a drawing or take some pictures showing the locations of your timing marks and rotor before you start
a gasket replacement program.
